Welcome to Sounion

“Safe guarded by the God of seas”

SOUNION and ATHENS

Glorious and breathtaking, Athens spreads her vibe to the globe no matter what the rumors say. It’s true that the city, protected by the Godess Athena, is a marble of historic findings, unbeatable spirit and glorious achievements. Our aim is to guide you in the city center, advise you what you may focus on, during your stay while you either waiting to depart or just ended your private weekly sailing cruise.

No matter where you come from, Athens will welcome you in a gentle way and the Athenians will treat you with the way they know best and that is ‘FILOTIMO’. As President Obama recently commented during his speech, while he visited Greece, Greeks are the parents of this word among others. They will host you in their city and you will hopefully feel like home!

The marble of Athens, symbol of the golden century of Perikles, Acropolis and the Parthenon can be seen from anywhere you are in Athens. Sounion, on the eastern edge of Attica (biggest region that includes Athens) is a great bay to swim and relax, most probably on the last day of you sailing cruise. Safe-guarded by the temple of Poseidon an epic monument located on the top of the cliff, that looks at the Aegean with pride and glory.

Enjoy your walk in the temple, return in Athens for the evening and get ready to walk in the city that never sleeps. Hope to see you in town!

SE 3 TOP THINGS TO DO IN SOUNION and Athens

Visit the temple of Poseidon

The doric Temple, home of the God of Seas, Poseidon. Surrounded by the legend of Aegeus who killed himself when he noticed that his son, Theseus, did not manage to kill the Minotaur in Crete. According to the Greek mythology, Theseus had managed to kill the Minotaur but he forgot to change the black sail that meant loss with the white one that meant victory, on his sailing back to Athens. Therefore, his father committed suicide not knowing the real course of events. The Temple is located on the eastern part of Attica and really on a magical edge of the mountain. It is really a strategic place looking at the Aegean and communicating on a clear day with KEA, KYTHNOS, SERIFOS and AEGINA. Don’t miss the chance to visit the temple and admire the view, the architecture of the monument and live the legend of the Greek mythology.

Visit the Acropolis and the Acropolis museum

What can someone say about this global symbol of classic spirit and civilization? One of the greatest constructions ever made, in terms of architecture, building performance and location The Acropolis is a trademark of Athens, Greece, ancient past and future. Located on the hill of Athens that supervises the city from above the biggest monument that arises is the Parthenon. Don’t miss the chance to visit this magical monument if you are visiting Athens. During the peak months, it would be good to visit either quite early or in the afternoon because the rocky formation of the hill will make the temperatures unbearable. In addition, this way you would avoid the cues created from people trying to buy a ticket to enter. Right at the bottom of the hill the new Acropolis museum hosts all the important remainings of the Acropolis, found and secured in a really amazing building that is also worth visiting if you are in town. Enjoy!

Walk in ancient agora and plaka

The oldest and to our opinion most traditional part of Athens is the area of Plaka. Open only to pedestrians, the little colorful streets with gift stores and small restaurants is really a must see when you are visiting Athens. Full of street musicians, artists that will paint your face as a caricature, little girls that try to sell you flowers, it sounds touristic (we won’t tell you that it’s not..) but it is really worth visiting. Take a good eye always at your wallet (because there are some cases of pickpocketing) and try not to buy all souvenirs to bring back home. In most of the restaurants you will eat well, while once you are in Greece we will recommend you the ones we tried recently and are worth visiting. Before going to lunch or dinner we suggest you first to visit the ancient agora (even if you are not a history lover it’s worth it) that is the surrounding part of the Acropolis. This used to be the heart of Ancient Athens where all political, commercial and social activity took place, where the laws of justice took place and where all the cultural topics were born. It is really a productive place of democracy, civilization progress and spiritual insights. A walk in the past that should not be missed if you are in town!

We are very sensitive in being objective, in each island there are things we admire and others you need to be aware of
PROS

Athens is a great place to start your cruise since you can plan a route according to the weather.

Athens is really a center, close to everything

Everything is gathered around the center, so in one day you can see a lot out of the important sights

Sounion has a large bay that you will find a place to anchor

Sounion is close to Athens, just 3 hours sailing away

CONS

Sounion is not a good anchorage during the Northerly winds

It is always packed during Saturday evening due to the charter yachts anchoring to the place

If there are Southerly winds anchoring at night is quite bumpy

‘Sounion, on your way back on Friday is a nice stop to relax after the crossing coming back from the Cyclades. I would definitely recommend you not to get bored and visit the temple. Don’t forget to take a picture of your sailing yacht or catamaran once you are on the hill!’.

  • Great yacht charter near Athens

Having had 7 sailing holidays with large corporate companies I decided to get qualified and bareboat charter a yacht of my own with 7 other non sailing freinds. I chose Yachtsailing.gr as the exchange of e-mails with Maria and Eugene put me at ease and gave the impression that the company really cared about their customers. This proved to be true, the service and advice that I recieved was second to none. I chartered a 420 Lagoon which my guests and I were very pleased with. The yacht was well prepared and cleaned as well as equiped with the most comprehensive galley to date. Eugene and Maria were excellent with their advice and help, they went the extra (nautical) mile to help us in ever way that they could. If you are looking for a charter check out Yachtsailing.gr.

  • Fantastic charter experience

We chartered a Fantasy 420 catamaran for one week out of Athens.

What a fantastic holiday we had. The vessel was surprisingly roomy with everything we could possibly want onboard. Well equipped and spotlessly clean. We pr-ordered our supplies which were delivered directly to the vessel.
Eugene gave us our brief on arrival, and both he and Marie and all other staff that we encountered were very friendly and helpful, even chasing through a lost suitcase of one of our party.
    Would love to return

Sites worth visiting

Monastiraki fleamarket

A walk in Monastiraki is always fun, will fill you with lively emotions due to the amount of people moving at this area 24/7, the shops that are always open including Sundays and has an active vibe all year round. It is a nice walk if you are near the area of plaka and some stores may hide hidden treasures for some of you!

Take a bus tour

Once you are in town you will notice some open roof buses spinning around Athens center. It is really a nice ride (costs approx. 15 Euros/person) and will drive you through the most important monuments and sightseeing of the Athens center. Along the way you have the possibility to listen to the recorded guide through ear plus, included in the price of the drive. Even if it sound touristic, I have tried it and it is worth it!

Local Tastes

Kebab

If you are in town and you would like to try one of the well-known dishes grilled by the most famous old restaurants of the old city, then you can try kebab from ‘Thanassis’ or ‘ Savvas’. In the city center, right next to the metro station. We know its packed but even if they seem touristic they are delicious and worth trying. Don’t expect something fancy or delicate. It is an old-school grill tavern, with lots of visitors and many locals. But still, its great!

Mousaka

One of the most famous dishes in the world. Many countries rival about who was the first to invent it. In Greece still it’s a potato based dish, with béchamel and layers of meat that make it more delicious. In the old town, it is considered one of the best dishes available and it is difficult to find one that might not be super yummy!

Staffed tomatoes

For Greeks maybe the best dish available. Always to be accompanied with a big piece of ‘feta’ on the side. If you know someone Greek maybe the best place to try the particular dish would be his place (maybe even better cooked by his mother). In case you don’t have this possibility then again the city center can be proven a good place to ask for this unique recipe!

The weather
  • Athens - Average temperatures of 30C during July and August
  • Very sunny and hot during summer
  • Sounion bay – gusts of wind during northern winds
  • Night anchorage might be proven bumpy if wind is blowing from the South
  • During strong Northerly winds can be used as a shelter
  • Nice sandy sea bottom for good grip
